The ANR project “Architecture, aluminum and heritage 20th-21st centuries” has been developing research for 4 years on the history of aluminum in architecture, its heritage and its conservation. The history of aluminum and its alloys in architecture had until now only been considered in a fragmented manner, through monographic and biographical approaches, in which the figure of Jean Prouvé dominated.Throughout the work, the contribution of other actors, such as Jean de Mailly or Marcel Lods, allows us to understand how this metal was understood, what its qualities were and the constraints encountered.Cross-referencing case studies by building or type of building also tends to show the differences in economic and technical issues from the point of view of project owners, architects, engineers and companies.
This metal, a source of technical innovations and artistic creation, integrates societal issues such as sustainability and the circular economy.Better knowledge of its dissemination, in time and space, of the strategies of the actors, of the techniques of implementation and conservation must help to reflect on the objectives of sustainable developmentProduced across France, a corpus of old technical objects made of aluminum alloy was created and studied to determine the nature of the alloys used over time, the state of conservation and the types of corrosion encountered. The creation of a multidisciplinary database will be made available in order to study the diffusion of its uses in the building and help define conservation and restoration strategies.
The final conference will present the work carried out and open up new research perspectives, particularly abroad.Carried out in partnership with the Historical Monuments Research Laboratory and the National School of Architecture of Paris La Villette, this conference will bring together researchers, conservation/restoration professionals and architectural practitioners – architects and industrialists.
Three themes guide the discussions, in an interdisciplinary dimension:
The history of aluminum alloys in architecture and its stakeholders
Heritage processes
Conservation/restoration states
